Formative Assessment Lessons
Below are brief descriptions on the two types of lessons you will encounter throughout these resources.
Concept Development
These Formative Assessment Lessons are designed to be part of an instructional unit. This task should be implemented approximately two-thirds of the way through the instructional unit. The results of this task would then be used to inform the instruction that will take place for the remainder of your unit.
The goal of each lesson is that a particular concept is reinforced and understanding is deepened through well planned activities that challenge students' thinking.

Problem Solving
These Formative Assessment Lessons lend themselves to a broader range of use and can be implemented at any point in time. (Content appropriate) These tasks often pose the student(s) with a relatively open task(s) that lends itself to multiple entry points, multiple strategies for solving, and multiple methods of representing the work. Although these are not intended to promote one particular concept it does allow for the teacher to see the various strategies the students utilize. In turn, the teacher is able to make informed decisions about what concepts need to be the focus of instruction
